Kentucky Wildcats freshman Jamal Murray had a breakout showing this summer. That was thanks in large part to a tremendous showing for Team Canada in the Pan-Am Games in July.
It looks like the Canadian team wants him back to represent their country once again only this time on a much bigger stage.
According to College Basketball Talk, Murray has been listed on the training camp roster for Team Canada for the FIBA Americas event. Team Canada is pulling out all the stops for the FIBA event because they must either win or finish second to qualify for the Olympics.
Murray is the only college player to be competing for a spot on the team as he is going against NBA players like Andrew Wiggins, Kelly Olynk, and Nik Stauskas. The main concern for Murray and Team Canada right now, if he makes the team, is if that schedule will conflict the Wildcats’ schedule.
The FIBA Americas event takes place in Mexico City from August 31 to September 12. Classes at Kentucky start on August 26, meaning Murray may have to decide between one or the other this fall.
Whether or not Murray makes the team, his experience at the training camp will be useful. He gets the chance of going up against top NBA players at an “elite-level camp.”
The Wildcats open the 2015-16 season on November 13 when they host Albany.
