Sometimes, businesses make big promises that their checkbook sometimes can’t cash. You’ve heard of car dealers offering fifty percent discounts if the local team loses to their rival or jewelry stores offering a $1,000 gift certificate to customers if a team scores “X” amount of points.
What Rutgers is doing might just take the cake for “ideas that are probably going to end badly for you.”
According to College Spun, the university is promising to give away $1,000 to 100 randomly selected students if the Scarlet Knights return their first kickoff against Norfolk State for a touchdown. That’s $100,000, people.
If Rutgers returns 1st kickoff vs. Norfolk State for TD, 100 random students sitting in student section will each receive $1,000 each

Kickoff return touchdowns don’t happen every day, but, considering who the team is playing, it is very possible. The university may have just wrote a check that they don’t want to cash at all.
It must be hard for the President and Board of Trustees right now. Of course they want to see their team do well, but they are hoping that Norfolk State has a really strong kicker and is able to boot the ball out the back of the endzone.
Return specialist Janarion Grant could be the one to make the students a little richer. He returned a kickoff for a touchdown in 2013 and averaged twenty-five yards per return last season. I’d say the odds are in the students’ favor.
Let’s see how crazy the students go if this happens on September 5.
