It was reported late Friday afternoon that Illinois had fired head coach Tim Beckman just a week before their season began. Later that afternoon, it was said that Beckman was going to extreme measures to cover up injuries during practice.
According to College Football Talk, Beckman responded to those allegations just hours after his termination and he was obviously on the defensive very quickly. The Associated Press’s Ralph Russo reported his comments via Twitter.
Statement from Tim Beckman: "I am shocked and disappointed by the decision Mike Thomas and the University of Illinois made today …. "

Tim Beckman statement: "I firmly deny the implications in Mike's statements that I took any action that was not in the best interests …."

Beckman continued "… of the health, safety and well-being of my players. The health and well-being of our SAs is of paramount importance"

Beckman statement: "the University's actions … are in violation of the procedures mandated under my employment agreement."

Tim Beckman statement: "I will vigorously defend both my reputation and my legal rights."

While Beckman’s time in Illinois, and possibly as a head coach anywhere, is more than likely done, it is pretty clear what he is attempting to do. He knows that he is still owed $3.1 million on his contract and is probably going to slap the university with a lawsuit that will be a distraction all season long, which is the last thing the Illini want.
Let’s hope they can keep their heads in the game when they host Kent State on September 4.
