There’s no doubt about it. College football fans love beer. Penn State fans also love Joe Paterno, so it’s really no surprise that the JoePa-themed beer that hit the shelves just last week has already nearly sold out.
According to ESPN, the beer, which was revealed to the world just over a week ago, has been an absolute hit and it is already flying off the shelves near the Penn State campus.
“We’ve sold close to a million cans,” said Mark Dudash, owner of Duquesne out of Latrobe, Pennsylvania. “We’re just trying to keep up with demand.”
Dudash talked about the stores not wanting to go all in on buying the beer at first, saying that they didn’t want to have a lot of beer overstocked in their stores.
“In the beginning, there was some reluctance,” Dudash said. “Wholesalers didn’t want to overbuy and then have some fire sale.”
The football season has yet to begin, but Dudash had pretty large aspirations about the beer. He set a goal to have a certain number of barrels sold by mid-season and he exceeded it tremendously.
“One distributor would order one palette, then the next day four palettes and then next day a half of a truckload,” Dudash said. “We had hoped by the fifth Penn State game to have sold 500 barrels worth. We’re up to 3,000 barrels already.”
To be clear, one barrel holds thirteen and a half cases of beer. A case of beer is 24 12-ounce cans. I’m a writer, so I will let you guys do the math, but I do know that that is A LOT of beer in just one week.
The craziest thing about that is the fact that the beer is only being sold in Pennsylvania and parts of New Jersey. Imagine if this was being sold nationwide, which it probably will be very soon. There are Nittany Lion fans all over the country that would by this beer by the cart-load.
