North Dakota to vote on new mascot on October 19

In a story that has been brewing since April of this year, the North Dakota University athletic program will finally be deciding on a new nickname. The school has gone just simply by the school’s name since they dropped their Fighting Sioux nickname amidst pressure from the NCAA and the Native American community.

For months, the team had narrowed down a list of 11,000 names down five. The school had considered keeping no nickname for their athletic teams, but that has finally been confirmed to be out of the running.

The final five nicknames are Nodaks, North Stars, Roughriders, Fighting Hawks, and Sundogs. The vote will take place on October 19 and it will be a binding decision.

North Dakota students, staff, faculty, alumni, retirees, donors, and season ticket holders are eligible to vote on the new nickname. A nickname that gets more than 50 percent of the vote will be automatically selected, but if no teams get more than 50 percent, the top two will be placed in a revote.
