New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees is missing his first game due to injury for the first time in his nine-year tenure. He took a hard shot to his throwing shoulder, the same one that was operated on in 2005, in last week’s loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and was diagnosed with a bruised rotator cuff.
Backup quarterback Luke McCown is making his first start since 2013 and it’s likely that he will be making a few more. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Brees is currently listed as doubtful for next week’s matchup against the Dallas Cowboys.
This does not bode well for New Orleans. The team is currently 0-2 and their offense hasn’t been able to produce much of anything in their first two games.
If Brees is not able to play in the next few games, the Saints could be looking at one of their worst starts since before he and Sean Payton came to the team in 2006. Let’s just hope McCown has a little more protection from the offensive line than Brees has had this season.
