Auburn looks to Saints for latest defensive coaching hire

The Auburn Tigers lost defensive coordinator Will Muschamp to South Carolina when he agreed to become their new head coach in late November. They signed LSU’s Kevin Steele away to run their defense and they have looked back to the state of Louisiana for another defensive coach.

According to College Football Talk, the Tigers announced via a press release on Thursday that they had hired Wesley McGriff away from the New Orleans Saints to coach their defensive backs for the 2016 season. Head coach Gus Malzahn talked about adding the experienced coach to their staff.

“I’m very pleased to add Wesley to our staff at Auburn,” Malzahn said. “He has a tremendous amount of experience and success in developing players at the college and NFL levels. Wesley’s a true professional and a man of character that will be a great coach and mentor for our players.”

Before joining the Saints in 2013, McGriff spent time at Kentucky (2001-02), Vanderbilt (2011), and Ole Miss (2012). The former Savannah State defensive back also coached at Baylor from 2003-06 and Miami from 2007-10.
