The San Francisco 49ers hired Chip Kelly as their new head coach less than a week ago and he is already trying to begin a new regime in the Bay Area. One of the ways he is trying to change things is by bringing in a new coaching staff and it looks like he is trying to bring in a big name to run their offense.
Alabama offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin has done a terrific job running the Crimson Tide offense the last two seasons. This makes it hard to believe that he would leave Tuscaloosa, but that didn’t stop Kelly and the 49ers from trying.
It was already reported that Kelly had visited the Crimson Tide just days before the national championship, but that was also more than a week before he was hired in San Francisco. It is now being reported that Kelly has stayed in touch with Alabama and has even contacted Kiffin about possibly joining his staff for the 2016 season.
In January 2015, Kiffin was rumored to be the new coordinator with the 49ers under then-head coach Jim Tomsula. However, he stayed with the Crimson Tide and led them to a national championship.
Kiffin has minimal experience in the NFL, serving as the Jacksonville Jaguars’ offensive quality control coordinator in 2000 and as the head coach of the Oakland Raiders for the 2007 season before being fired four games into the 2008 season.
What do you think, fans? Should Kiffin and Kelly work together in San Francisco or should he stay in Tuscaloosa?
