“Avatar 2” was set to be one of the biggest movies of 2017, especially after the success of James Cameron’s first movie in 2009. That movie racked up the biggest box office numbers in history, which wasn’t knocked from its post until “Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens” did just that after its release in December 2015.
Fans of Cameron’s franchise will be disappointed to learn that the sequel will reportedly not be ready for its scheduled release on Christmas 2017. This comes just days after Disney announced “Star Wars Episode VIII” would be pushed back to December 2017, seven months after its original release date, which would set up a potential five-star battle at the box office.
Jim Gianopulos, chairman and CEO of Twentieth Century Fox, talked with The Wrap about the film’s producer saying “James Cameron has his own pace.”
Cameron announced around this time last year that he didn’t believe the movie would be ready in time for its release. That came after the movie was pushed back to 2017 after it had an initial release date of December 2016 with two additional sequels set for 2018 and 2019.
