Iowa State students are famously camping out well in advance of the Cyclones’ game against Kansas on Monday, but met an unforeseen obstacle early this morning.
According to Andrew Doughty of Campus Rush, as well as a local news report, two tents and surrounding tarps caught fire.
“Basically, this morning, I woke up to the smell of smoke,” Josiah O’Polka, a sophomore, told WHO-TV, Des Moines’ local NBC affiliate. “I peeked my head out and there flames.”
It is believed that propane heaters, used to help those camping out deal with the cold weather (between 10 and 25 degrees most of the week), were the cause of the fire. Fortunately, O’Polka took initiative.
“I did the first thing I could think of. I grabbed the propane tanks and moved them far away,” said O’Polka. “Within a matter of minutes the police and fire departments showed up. They got everything put out quickly.”
There were no injuries, but this is a sign of fandom going just a bit too far. Thus, don’t be shocked if Iowa State puts restrictions on camping out and waiting for tickets.
