The NFL has been reaching out and trying to do more international games. They have had at least two games in London the last few seasons and have experimented with a game in Toronto as well.
Last year, officials traveled to Mexico City to see if Estadio Azteca was ready to host an NFL game and it looks like it could be happening. The Houston Chronicle is reporting that the game between the Houston Texans and Oakland Raiders could be taking place in Mexico City.
“We’ve always expressed that we have an interest in participating internationally as a road team, we’ve made it clear that we were most interested in doing that in Mexico,” Texans President Jamey Rootes told the paper.
“It’s an amazing opportunity for teams and the league. Mexico City is a logical choice for a team like the Texans. We’d be a great ambassador for the league.”
The stadium hosted a game between the Arizona Cardinals and San Francisco 49ers in 2005, but having the Texans, who are the closest NFL team to the city, play a game there could be best to grow a fan base south of the border.
