Former Ole Miss defensive tackle Robert Nkemdiche certainly has a lot of controversy surrounding him right now. Back in December, he suffered a scary incident where he fell out of a hotel window and suffered minor injuries.
Police investigated the situation and found marijuana along with other drug paraphernalia in the room. He was charged with possession and suspended from the Rebels’ Sugar Bowl game on New Year’s Day.
On Friday, Nkemdiche spoke with reporters at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis and claimed that he wasn’t under the influence of any drug, but did admit to have been drinking. He then went on to blame his current image issues on the “media.”
“The media’s done a tarnish to my name,” Nkemdiche said according to CBS Sports, “but I’ve just got to make them understand me as a person.”
Many believe that Nkemdiche’s character is what is going to hurt him in the NFL. He fell from the possible number one player in this year’s draft to possibly a late first round or second round selection.
While I can agree that the media does sometimes over play some character issues such as Nkemdiche’s, you still have to look at some of the facts. He still admitted have been drinking (underage, by the way) and put himself in a situation where he would look bad.
He will have to be smarter in some of the choices he makes in the NFL if he doesn’t want to end up like some other players that have already ruined their career because of their off-field actions.
