ESPN analyst Stephen A. Smith is really good about spouting off at mouth about a lot of things and then end up being wrong and looking arrogant. However, what he said on the Monday morning edition of “First Take” might just have some merit behind it.
The subject of the Cleveland Cavaliers came up and he talked about the future of Kyrie Irving. He said that Irving isn’t happy with what is going on in Cleveland right now and that he wants out sooner rather than later.
“Dating back to last year, I’ve been told that Kyrie Irving ain’t too happy being in Cleveland,” Smith said. “The situation is not ideal for him. I don’t know the particulars, I haven’t spoken to him personally. It’s somethings that I’ve been hearing for months; that under ideal circumstances he would prefer to be someplace other than Cleveland.”
This is just the next piece in the long saga that has been brewing surrounding Irving the last few years. There were rumors that he wasn’t going to re-sign in 2014, just before LeBron James returned home.
He and James have clashed since the latter’s return and it hasn’t been a happy marriage for the two former top NBA Draft picks. James even called him out for not passing enough during a blowout loss, which has been a problem for Irving since entering the league in 2011.
There is nothing stating that Irving is wanting out of his contract, but it could be a big deal to watch in the coming months. It could even heavily affect what the Cavs can do when it comes to the playoffs.
