Pittsburgh Panthers women’s basketball head coach Suzie McConnell-Serio is one of the better coaches in the ACC today and she has helped the Panthers to a good bit of success the last few years. She has been recognized for that success and will now lead a national team of talented players.
McConnell-Serio was just named the head coach of the USA basketball women’s U18 National Team at the FIBA World Championships this July, which will take place in Chile. She will be joined by Northern Colorado head coach Kamie Etheridge and Elon head coach Charlotte Smith, all three of whom have gold medals as players.
“It’s such an incredible honor to be named the head coach for USA Basketball,” McConnell-Serio said. “I was shocked to be asked and also thankful that the committee selected me. You never imagine something like this happening, and when you’re asked to do it there is no hesitation because to represent your country and wear USA on your chest, there is no greater sense of pride. I am so excited to have this opportunity.”
McConnell-Serio will lead the team into Chile as they look to defend their gold medals, which they have won at the last six events dating back to 2004. The has won a total of eight gold medals, including ones in 1988 and 2000, as well as silver medals in 1992 and 1996.
