Some of the most hated people in sports today either play or have played for the Duke Blue Devils basketball team. One player who seems to have avoided that hate is former superstar J.J. Redick.
The Los Angeles Clipper joined The Dan Patrick Show on Wednesday and discussed why so many hate people that have played for the Blue Devils. J.J. Redick attributed it to the team having a narrative surrounding them that says they should be hated.
“It’s really been about 15 or 20 years where college basketball fans that have been spoon-fed that narrative,” he said. “Before I got to Duke, there were articles that said ‘You’re going to hate J.J. Redick.’ My senior year, there were articles being written about out team saying ‘You’re going to hate Greg Paulson,’ and then it was John Shire.”
There is certainly a ton of hate that has always surrounded the Blue Devils. There is even an ESPN 30 for 30 documentary called “I Hate Christian Laettner,” the former Blue Devil star that beat the Kentucky Wildcats on a last-second shot in the Elite Eight.
I don’t know what the hate surrounding the Blue Devils is about. Maybe it is because they are so good or maybe it is because that has become the normal thing to do now.
Whatever it may be, things have only gotten worse and I don’t expect them to get any better at this point.
