While most of the attention in March will rightfully go to the NCAA Tournament, the there are those programs which just missed out that are looking to make a big statement to end their season.
That is why you have to love the NIT.
On Sunday, following the announcement of the 2016 NCAA Tournament field, ESPN hosted a bracket show of its own to release the 2016 NIT field.
We had previously known Wagner, Hofstra, Bucknell, Belmont, UAB, IPFW, High Point and North Florida would automatically be placed in the field, but who joined them? What region does your favorite team have to fight through and when will they begin play?
Let’s answer all of those questions.
The NIT Selection Committee will conduct selections for the 2015 Postseason NIT, March 13-15. Any regular-season champion of an NCAA Division I conference (as determined by the conference’s tie-break protocol) not otherwise selected to the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship will secure an automatic qualification into the NIT. The committee will then select the best available teams to fill the 32-team NIT field. Once selected teams are seeded and placed into one of four eight-team regions.
First, Second and Quarterfinal Rounds
The first three rounds of the NIT are hosted at the campus site of one of the participating teams. For each game, the higher-seeded team will have the first option host unless logistical circumstances preclude such an opportunity.
