St. Mary’s HC finds out about Tournament snub from leaked bracket

The St. Mary’s Gaels were looking to slip into the 2016 NCAA Tournament with an At-Large bid after falling to the Gonzaga Bulldogs in the West Coast Conference tournament championship game. However, the team was left out in a pretty surprising move and will likely hope for a NIT spot.

However, St. Mary’s head coach Randy Bennett knew that his team wasn’t a part of March Madness way before the CBS Selection Sunday broadcast was over. In fact, he told reporters that he found out about the snub before all the teams were announced due to the full bracket being leaked just minutes into the show.

Once again, this is a pretty big flub by CBS and the NCAA, because Bennett wasn’t the only person to know about the bracket being leaked. The bracket was jumping around social media and many stopped watching the show, which was pointless after the leak, and started furiously filling out their own brackets.

The Gaels finished the 2015-16 season with a 27-5 record and a WCC regular season championship. Now they will hope to find themselves in the NIT and compete for a championship there.

Whatever happens, the NCAA and CBS must learn to do a better job of controlling leaks such as this. If not, this will become a running trend for years to come.
