This year, CBS tried to help out their ratings for the 2016 NCAA Selection Show. They tried to do that by expanding the one-hour show to two hours and it has turned out to be one of the worst moves they could have ever possibly made.
On Sunday, they changed up their format for the show, taking more than an hour to reveal the entire field for the NCAA Tournament. They also brought in NBA analysts Kenny Smith and Charles Barkley, who have both admittedly not watched much college basketball this year.
This, along with the entire field being leaked less than an hour into the show, led the to show drawing its lowest ratings in two decades, according to SportsBusines Daily’s Austin Karp.
CBS drew a 3.7 overnight rating for NCAA Selection Show. Lowest in around 20 years. First-ever 2-hour format in 2016. Also had bracket leak.

Coupled with the 2016 College Football Playoff, the NCAA Selection Show has made for some pretty awful ratings for sports events this year. However, ESPN couldn’t really help their event’s ratings while CBS made major changes that hurt it in the long run.
I think they will be switching back to the one-hour show next year.
