Austin Mack first freshman to have black stripe removed

There is a tradition at Ohio State for incoming freshman that is pretty sacred among the veteran players on the team. All freshman must wear a black stripe on their helmet until they prove themselves worthy of being on the team and Austin Mack did just that on Thursday.

Head coach Urban Meyer announced Thursday morning that Mack was the first freshman to have his stripe removed, earning his spot on the Buckeyes’ roster. This was the fastest a freshman ever had his black stripe removed, so you know he had to impress.

Austin Mack came to Ohio State as a four-star wide receiver out of Fort Wayne, Indiana. He was the second-ranked player in the state and one of the top wide receivers in the country.

It isn’t very often that a freshman receiver makes an impact so early on a team, but it certainly seems like Mack has done just that. Let’s see how he does in the fall.
