UNLV coach Chris Beard meets with Texas Tech

Chris Beard was hired by the UNLV Rebels as men’s basketball head coach late last month. However, he already has an interview for a potential new gig. Beard will be meeting with the Texas Tech Red Raiders, who lost Tubby Smith to Memphis on Thursday.

UNLV’s athletic director confirmed the news in a statement.

While UNLV is allowing Beard to meet with the Red Raiders, they are hoping for a resolution very soon.

“Late this afternoon, I was contacted by the athletics director at Texas Tech seeking permission to speak with Coach Beard about its men’s basketball head-coaching vacancy,” Tina Kunzer-Murphy said in a statement. “This evening, Coach Beard met with officials from Texas Tech. We were made aware of the meeting before it took place.

“I have since met with Coach Beard, and we have agreed to have this resolved by tomorrow.”

A big reason for Beard’s flirtation with Texas Tech is familiarity. Beard grew up in Lubbock and continues to have family close by.

“People ask me all the time where I’m from,” Beard said. “I moved around a lot as a kid, and I’ve coached a lot of different places, but Lubbock’s the longest I’ve ever lived somewhere, 10 years. And two of my three daughters were born here. It was a little bit emotional. I’d be lying if I said anything different.”

While it would be easy to criticize Beard for considering another job shortly after receiving a new one, family comes first. If he decides that is the most important thing in this decision, more power to him.
