Video: Surfer Gabriel Medina lands first ever backflip in competition

Gabriel Medina had a monumental moment in the world of extreme sports over the weekend, by landing a special trick for the first time ever in competition, according to Surf Europe.

Medina was competing on the second day of the Oi Rio Pro when he received perfect 10’s across the board for an impressive backflip.

The backflip wasn’t perfect, but everyone is forgiving Medina for going a bit off-axis because of the incredible air and bravery it took to even attempt the trick. Now, Medina can only improve on his backflips from here.

What ground-breaking trick will we see in surfing next? It’s going to be interesting to find out.
