Preakness results 2016: Exaggerator tops Nyquist, ends Triple Crown bid
On Saturday evening, the 11-horse field at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland stepped out onto the track for the 141st running of the Preakness Stakes. Entering the Second Jewel of the Triple Crown, Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist was the heavy favorite as the horse looked to continue its undefeated run.
Nyquist got off to a quick start along with Uncle Lino and Awesome Speed, while Exaggerator was 13 lengths off the lead entering the first turn.
Nyquist and Uncle Lino continued to pace the field entering the final turn of the track. Exaggerator was making its move and rode the rail to fifth place coming out of the far turn. Nyquist and Uncle Lino were neck and neck coming down the back stretch, but Exaggerator made an incredible run to take the lead.
That run led Exaggerator all the way to the finish for the Preakness win, ending Nyquist’s quest for the Triple Crown. Nyquist finished the race in third-place, while Cherry Wine finished in second.
It was the third Preakness Stakes win of jockey Kent Desormeaux’s hall of fame career.
With the Preakness Stakes now in the books, we have three weeks until the Triple Crown heads to Elmont, New York for “The Run for the Carnations” at Belmont.
