New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski is an incredible athlete and starred in multiple sports growing up. However, he hasn’t played organized basketball since he was in high school, so it was probably a pretty big surprise when he called out Shaquille O’Neal and challenged him to a three-point contest.
Gronkowski got the inspiration for the challenge when Charles Barkley challenged NBA TV colleague Ernie Johnson, who has never played basketball, to a shootout during Game 4 of the Western Conference Finals.
Despite having no experience, Johnson won, which prompted Gronk to challenge Shaq on Twitter.
@NBAonTNT Love playing the three point contest. Let me get next vs Shaq lol 🏀

O’Neal, surprisingly, responded via NBA on TNT’s Twitter account and it seems like the future showdown is set.
Hey @RobGronkowski, Call me. –@Shaq pic.twitter.com/CceTH9OOnb

Shaq was never really the one to take outside shots during his career and Gronk was a towering beast down low during his high school glory days. I don’t really know who would have the upper hand here, but I think the edge would have to go to Tom Brady’s favorite target.
We can only hope this matchup actually happens very soon.
