Blaine Gabbert ‘heavy favorite’ to be 49ers starting QB

The San Francisco 49ers will enter the 2016-17 NFL season with either Colin Kaepernick or Blaine Gabbert as the starting quarterback. As things currently stand, Gabbert is the reported favorite to win the starting job.

On Wednesday, NFL Media columnist reported that Gabbert is currently the “heavy favorite” to be the Niners’ starting quarterback. His lead seems to be coming from being a true leader among the team.

“He’s loved in this locker room,” Silver said of Gabbert. “He did a lot of good things last year and I’d be shocked if he’s not the starter in the opener.”

Blaine Gabbert joined the 49ers in 2014 and he started eight games for the team in 2015. He went 3-5 while throwing for 2,031 yards, 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He may not be the franchise player answer for Chip Kelly’s club, but they hope he can be the answer for now.

The 49ers open the season on Sept. 12 when they host the Los Angeles Rams.
