Ex-UTSA head coach Brooks Thompson dies at 45

There is some sad news to report in the college basketball world, with news that former UTSA head coach Brooks Thompson has died at the age of 45.

“The UTSA family is very saddened to learn that Brooks Thompson passed away on Thursday,” UTSA Associate Vice President/Director of Athletics Lynn Hickey said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Michelle, his daughters Ryan Michelle, Brooke and Addison, and the rest of his family in this difficult time.”

While Thompson was most recently head coach at UTSA, he was also a standout guard at Oklahoma State during his playing days.

“On behalf of every one of my Cowboy teammates, our hearts go out to Michelle and the girls,” fellow former Oklahoma State guard Doug Gottlieb wrote on social media. “We loved Brooks and will honor the great father he was by picking up the torch as a family and helping out.”

Thompson left his post as UTSA head coach in March following a 5-26 season.

In recent months, Thompson has been dealing with serious health issues since being admitted to the hospital back in April due to double organ failure. Thompson was in critical condition.

Our deepest condolences go out to Thompson’s family and friends, and the entire UTSA basketball program.
