Earlier this week, the Sun Belt announced they would join the rest of the FBS by starting a conference championship game with the 2018 season. As with most smaller conferences, the championship game won’t be getting an immediate neutral site to determine its conference champion.
Sun Belt commissioner Karl Benson announced that the championship game will be played on one of the two teams’ campuses. He said that it would likely be best for their fan bases.
“We have great fan bases. We have some great facilities within the Sun Belt that we think could and would showcase Sun Belt football,” Benson said Wednesday. “So I think, in the early stages, the route that we will take will be on one of our campuses.”
The conference decided to have a conference championship game in 2018 instead of next year because Coastal Carolina will not be eligible for postseason play until then. The Chanticleers move up to the FBS and the Sun Belt in 2017 and have a two-year probationary period before being eligible for the postseason.
