The NHL has been flirting with expansion and a potential Las Vegas franchise, and the league has finally settled on the city for a new franchise.
It was reported by Greg Beacham of Associated Press that the NHL is looking to put a new team in Sin City, granted that the organizers can come up with the needed $500 million. Additional details on expansion will be released at its Board of Governors meeting on June 22.
The new team would not start playing in Las Vegas until the 2017-18 season at the earliest, so it could be just one season before a 31st team is added to the league.
This would be the first time the league has expanded since adding the Minnesota Wild and Columbus Blue Jackets in 2000.
The city outbid Quebec City for NHL expansion and it says that they have already secured more than 13,000 season-ticket deposits. The team would likely play at T-Mobile Arena, a 20,000-seat multipurpose arena that opened in April.
