Washington Redskins hire first female head physician Dr. Robin West

In the last decade, it seems that women have become more and more involved in the sports business.

According to ESPN.com’s Stephania Bell and John Keim, the Washington Redskins have hired Dr. Robin West as as the team’s director of sports medicine. With this, West has become the first female to ever be the head physician of an NFL team.

West is already very familiar with working with professional athletes, as she’s also the lead team physician for baseball’s Washington Nationals. West has NFL experience too, as she worked for the Pittsburgh Steelers for 11 years.

After her hire, she also spoke on the concussion debate that’s currently going on. “(Football is as) safe as it’s ever been,” West stated.

“We have a lot of eyes on the field looking and all the research,” West claimed. “The NFL puts tens of millions into concussion research as well as the technology behind preventing head injuries.”

West will work partnered with renowned orthopedist Dr. James Andrews, the Redskins’ consultant.
