Pau Gasol has been one of the most outspoken athletes regarding the Zika concerns hanging over the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. There is still no word on whether Gasol will compete in the games, but if he does, he is considering some pretty extreme measures.
Because Gasol is concerned about the possibility of contracting Zika, he is considering freezing his sperm before the Olympics.
“Freezing sperm is one of the measures I have to consider,” Gasol said, according to the Associated Press.
Zika, which can be transmitted from mosquitoes and can also be sexually transmitted, has been linked to neurological problems in adults but is most commonly linked to birth defects in children.
Freezing his sperm before the games would allow Gasol to still produce a healthy child without concerns of birth defects were he to contract the disease.
Plenty of athletes are concerned over the virus leading up to the games, which begin on Aug. 5, so it will be interesting to see what other precautionary measures are taken. Of course, the safest measure would be to avoid traveling to Brazil for the Olympics altogether, but for some of the world’s best athletes this is a platform and opportunity too big to pass up.
