After more than 100 years away from the Olympics, golf will be returning once again as athletes take to Rio de Janeiro for the 2016 summer games in August. However, it will be without the world’s top golfer as Jason Day has announced he will withdraw his name from the pool of athletes due to concerns over the Zika virus.
Day is the second golfer to pull out the games this year as Rory McIlroy, another top player, pulled out last week.
The Zika virus has become a real concern for most of the athletes down in Brazil this year as these golfers aren’t the only athletes to withdraw their names from consideration.
If the sport of golf is going to become a staple at the Olympics once again, this certainly isn’t the way to do it. However, you can’t blame Jason Day or any other of the athletes for being worried about the virus.
The Olympics begin Aug. 5 and run through Aug. 24.
