There has been a big debate on whether NASCAR is a real sport or just pure entertainment with vehicles. It certainly seems like Jacksonville Jaguars linebacker Telvin Smith believes the latter and is also convinced the drivers are athletes.
Smith is a big fan of NASCAR and he was even in Daytona this weekend to drive the pace car. After that experience, he spoke with reporters and said that he had a newfound respect for the drivers, but still doesn’t seem to think kickers are real athletes.

This is pretty ironic for Smith since the Jaguars have one of the best young kickers in the NFL in Jason Myers. Last season, Myers was 32-39 on extra points and 26-30 on field goals with a long of 58 in his rookie season with the Jaguars.
It is pretty hard to believe that it takes a lot of athletic prowess to be a kicker in the NFL, but it doesn’t take hardly any to be a driver in NASCAR. I find that a lot of fans are going to disagree with Telvin Smith on this.
