Earlier this year, Mike Tirico announced he would leave his post as the lead play-by-play man on ESPN’s Monday Night Football to take a big broadcasting role with NBC Sports. He will be the main voice for NFL preseasons game once the 2016 season gets underway.
NBC announced on Wednesday that he would be taking over a number of play-by-play duties almost immediately as he will start with coverage of The Open next week. He will join Cris Collinsworth for NBC’s first preseason game between the Atlanta Falcons and Miami Dolphins in Orlando on Aug. 25 followed by a match-up between the Jacksonville Jaguars and Cincinnati Bengals three days later.
“As promised, Mike will contribute to all of our biggest events,” NBC Sports executive producer Sam Flood said. “From Royal Troon to Rio to the NFL, and that’s just the start.”
This is a huge get for the network as Mike Tirico is one of the most universally-liked sports broadcasting personalities today. The only thing we can hope is that he sticks around and becomes a part of the “Football Night in America” crew or the network decides to make a three-person broadcast team on Sunday nights.
