The recent events in the United States have split a nation as two black men were killed by police officers and five Dallas Police officers were gunned down in some horrific tragedies. It seems like New York Knicks star Carmelo Anthony is a fan of the Black Lives Matter movement, but wants to take action and letting his voice actually be heard.
Last week, Anthony took to his Instagram account and called for other athletes to step up and help make a change in the country. However, he took things a step further this week when he talked about movement in an article with The Guardian.
“When I chose to speak out,” Anthony wrote, “it was a matter of being honest, speaking from the heart about what’s going on and calling on my colleagues to step up, get out there and put pressure on the people in charge to not let this happen anymore. No more hashtags.”
Carmelo Anthony has always been the one to speak his mind, but this doesn’t mean he is completely against the boys in blue. He said that there is usually one bad apple in the bunch that ruins every officer’s reputation.
“You have police that I know by first name. You have good relationships with some of these police,” Anthony said in an interview with VICE Sports. “And there will always be the one out of five who, you see him, you already know that it’s instant problems, right away. It’s not about trying to take down, or bad-mouth the police force and the officers. There are good police, and there are f—ed up police. That’s the way it is.”
If Anthony and other big name celebrities are able to take a stand, maybe there will be some kind of change. And then, maybe, just maybe, these senseless killings, on both sides of the coin, will finally come to an end before things get much, much worse.
