One of the biggest topics for discussion in college football this summer has been if the Big 12 was going to add more teams going into the future. On Tuesday, it became very clear that they will be doing that after the Board of Directors approved expansion.
ESPN’s Jake Trotter reported that the Big 12 had announced they will begin to look into expansion and that they want to add at least two members and possibly as many as four. It looks like the addition of new teams could happen as soon as by the end of the 2016 season.
“It’s a forward step, a positive step,” Oklahoma president and board chair David Boren said. “Not yet a decision … but it shows momentum on the board to consider [expansion] as a possibility.”
This is great news for teams like Cincinnati, BYU, Houston and Central Florida, all of whom have been mentioned in expansion talks over the last few months. It will certainly be interesting to see what they do going into these talks the next few months.
