AAC commissioner Mike Aresco not focused on Big 12 expansion

One of the biggest conversations in recent days has been the possible expansion of the Big 12 and which potential suitors could leave their current conferences to join the Power 5.

Programs like Houston, Memphis and Cincinnati have all been mentioned as favorites for Big 12 expansion, which could lead to an obvious concern for AAC commissioner Mike Aresco, who would have to deal with successful ACC teams bolting for a new conference.

While that could understandably be on Aresco’s mind, he seems to currently be taking the high road and says that business will go forward as usual.

“We’re going about our business,” Aresco said, via CBS Sports. “We have initiatives we’re working on.

“Whatever is going to happen is going to happen. I’m working hard for this conference, and I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished with this conference. You just tune out the distractions. We’ve got members here who are relying on the conference to support them. That’s our focus.”

Big 12 coaches reportedly favor BYU and Houston, with Cincinnati and Memphis shortly behind them in the poll.

If the Big 12 leaders continue to target the schools that they have identified as appealing targets early on in the process, Aresco may finally have to focus on the Big 12 distraction to keep his conference from falling apart.
