The Florida Gators have an interesting situation at the quarterback position and Luke Del Rio is the frontrunner to win the starting job right now. It just became a little more clear that the believe in him when the Gators put the former walk-on on a full scholarship.
This was pretty inevitable as Del Rio seemed to be the favorite for the starting job entering and exiting spring practice with the Gators. However, it must still feel pretty great for him and his father Jack Del Rio, head coach of the Oakland Raiders.
Luke Del Rio has been all over the country it seems as he began his career as a walk-on at Alabama in 2013, spending one season under current Florida head coach Jim McElwain, who was offensive coordinator with the Crimson Tide at the time. He then transferred and walked on at Oregon State in 2014 before doing the same ahead of the 2015 season at Florida.
Now, it looks like he will have the best chance to lead the Gators especially after he led his team to a 44-6 win in the team’s spring game, where he threw for 176 yards and two touchdowns on 10 of 11 passing.
The Gators open training camp next week and open the season on Sept. 3 when they host UMass.
