The United States women’s soccer team is set to begin its quest for a fourth Olympic gold medal on Wednesday when they take the field at Mineirão for a clash with New Zealand to kick off the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
United States enters the tournament as the clear favorite once again, with Colombia and France also scheduled foes in group play.
While having such high expectations could lead to unwanted pressure for the U.S. women, members of the team are embracing the pressure and looking forward to another gold medal performance.
“I don’t think anything compares to the expectations we have for one another. We know how difficult it will be to be back-to-back winners. That pressure drives us,” USA co-captain Becky Sauerbrunn told USSoccer.com.
“We always look for that next challenge because we constantly want to achieve that next level of greatness. People expect us to win, we know what it actually takes to win and that comes with a different level of accountability and sacrifice.”
