Softball, five others approved as 2020 Olympic sports

On Wednesday, the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan got a little bit more diverse when six sports were added to the list to be played that summer.

Softball will be one of the sports making its return to the Olympics after it was absent from the 2012 and 2016 games.

The International Olympic Committee announced that it had voted unanimously to add softball, baseball, surfing, karate, skateboarding and sport climbing in 2020. This is a huge step for the sport of softball as it will be just the fifth time it was included at the Olympics after it made four straight appearances from 1996-2008.

The United States won the first three Gold medals in softball, including their dominant 2000 run where they allowed just one hit throughout the entire event.

They fell to Japan in the Gold Medal game at the 2008 games in Beijing, China.
