Michigan cornerback Jourdan Lewis had a pretty great 2015 season for the Wolverines and he is looking to do just as well in 2016. However, it doesn’t look like head coach Jim Harbaugh wants him to just stick to defense and returning kicks this year.
Harbaugh spoke with MLive.com’s Nick Baumgardner on Sunday and seemed to hint that Lewis, arguably the best player on the team, will get a shot to help them out offensively and possibly play a Desmond Howard type role for the team.
“Yeah, on offense, I think there’s multiple ways he can contribute offensively,” Harbaugh said during Michigan’s annual media day. “We know he can as a returner … kick and punt returner, he has those abilities and capabilities.
“I don’t think I’m going too far out on a limb saying I think he can help us offensively as well.”
Lewis, who set a Michigan record with 20 pass deflections in 2015, also seems pretty excited about getting the opportunity to play everywhere for the Wolverines this year.
“I’ve always wanted to do this. I’ve always wanted to contribute to my team’s success in every way on the football field,” Lewis said. “I believe I can do that. Kickoff return, anything like that. Offense. Defense. I want to put my hand in everything because I know I have the ability to do so.”
Fellow Michigan defensive back Jabrill Peppers also helps out on offense some, scoring two touchdowns on the ground in 2015. He shared his beliefs on Lewis being able to make an impact as a two-way player.
“I don’t know why they haven’t been letting Jourdan play both ways. Jourdan is one of the craziest athletes I’ve ever seen,” Peppers said. “We have different body types and playing styles, but Jourdan could be just as efficient on offense as he is on defense. I’ve covered him, he’s covered me. So we speak from experience when we say that.
“People would have trouble with Jourdan on offense as they do on defense. I hope they give him a shot.”
The 2016 college football season marks the 25-year anniversary of Howard winning the Heisman Trophy. Could this be the year another two-way Michigan player steps up and hoists the trophy in December?
