DeShone Kizer on QB battle: ‘There’s supposed to be one quarterback’

Right now, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish are stuck on deciding between either Malik Zaire or DeShone Kizer for the starting quarterback position going into the 2016 season. Head coach Brian Kelly is going to use a two-quarterback system for at least the first game, but it doesn’t seem like either quarterback wants that.

On Wednesday, Zaire talked about the situation and said that he is trying “to turn chicken crap into chicken salad.” It seems that Kizer, who has been the presumed favorite for most of the offseason, feels a similar way.

There’s supposed to be one quarterback on the field at one time, and I committed here, and I decided to play college football so I can be that one guy,” Kizer said, according to ESPN’s Matt Fortuna.

“When you decide to play this position, especially at this level, you have to have the desire to be the only guy out there and to truly take credit for all the good and all the bad that happens within the team,” he continued. “That’s a part of being the complete quarterback, and in order to do so, I would love for it to be just me.”

Kizer took over for Zaire early in the season when the senior suffered a broken ankle. The junior performed very well, throwing for over 2,800 yards and 21 touchdowns while rushing for over 500 yards and 10 scores and leading the team to a Fiesta Bowl berth.

It will be interesting to see what comes of this situation and if a clear starter emerges from their Sept. 4 game against Texas.
