Virginia knows starting QB, Bronco Mendenhall to announce soon

The Virginia football program finally has its starting quarterback, but we are still waiting to learn who.

Returning starter Matt Johns  has been competing with senior Connor Brewer and junior transfer Kurt Benkert for the starting job, but quarterbacks coach Jason Beck says the No. 1 has already been established.

“It’s been a good competition but it did play itself out where we felt comfortable knowing who we’re going with,” Beck said, via the Richmond Times-Dispatch. “It was a spirited competition but it did sort itself out in a good time frame for us to start getting ready for the first week.”

The catch, however, is that Beck won’t shed any light on the starter.

Instead, the college football world will have to wait until head coach Bronco Mendenhall addresses the media to officially announce who will be under center for the season-opener.

While Johns has the experience as the returning starter, one to watch could be Benkert, who transferred from East Carolina where he played under Ruffin McNeill, who now serves as the assistant head coach and defensive line coach for the Cavaliers.

It’s going to be interesting to see who Mendenhall announces as the starter — which could come when he addresses the media at a scheduled appearance on Friday — but it appears clear that Beck is confident in his offense regardless of who is leading the way.
