When WWE split the brands into two separate entities in July, they created a brand new talk show for Smackdown Live with the clever name of “Talking Smack.” There have been some memorable moments on the show already, but nothing is going to stand up to what happened between General Manager Daniel Bryan and Intercontinental Champion The Miz.
The Miz and real-life wife Maryse joined the show, hosted by Renee Young and Bryan, and talked about being the champion for 141 days and counting, his longest reign out of the five he has had. Bryan decided to take a shot at Miz, saying he wrestles “like a coward.”
This set Miz off and cut the best promo he has ever done so in his decade-long career, saying he isn’t a coward because he doesn’t promise the fans he would be back in the ring and a year later he has to retire, which is exactly what Bryan did due to a career-threatening injury.
He called Bryan out, saying that if he really loved wrestling he would quit and go work in “bingo halls” in independent promotions, calling back to the former WWE World Heavyweight Champion’s past career in companies like Ring of Honor.
Young tried to ease the tension between the two to no avail and the General Manager ended up walking off the set and Miz looked directly into the camera and told everyone he didn’t care about any other championship except for the Intercontinental title because of its rich history in professional wrestling.
To put it plainly, it was the best promo, whether it was a work or an actual shoot, since CM Punk’s “pipebomb” back in 2011.
Now, this was likely just a work by The Miz and Bryan and will set up a storyline for the title as early as next week, but it was certainly a job well done by the champion, who has sort of grown stale over the last few months.
But if Miz was shooting from the hip and going off-script, which is what the show is intended to make fans think, it was pretty shocking that he stood up to Bryan like he did.
Either way, it is going to be very interesting to see how Bryan reacts to this next week on Smackdown Live.
