Ahead of last night’s season opener against the Savannah State Tigers, the Georgia Southern Eagles suspended seven players from the game after breaking team rules. Among the players suspended were backup running back L.A. Ramsby and third-string back Chaz Thornton.
This led to the team turning to Wesley Fields to step up and make plays for the team behind starter Matt Breida. The sophomore did just that as he rushed for 87 yards and a touchdown and caught two passes for 35 yards and another score.
Following the game, quarterback Favian Upshaw had high praise for Fields stepping up in the big role.
“He is the best back we have,” Upshaw said. “He can catch passes out of the backfield and runs tough. It is good to have a guy like him step up for us.”
That is certainly high praise for a guy like Fields. He has proven time and time again that he can play with the best of them after he rushed for 75 yards and a touchdown in the 2015 GoDaddy Bowl, where he was named Offensive MVP, and was named to the All-Sun Belt Newcomer Team.
It will be interesting to see how he continues to step up for the Eagles throughout the rest of the season. They travel to play the South Alabama Jaguars in Mobile next Saturday.
