The best opening weekend in college football has come and gone and the new rankings will be released later today. After last night’s phenomenal match-up between Florida State and Ole Miss, ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit appeared on SportsCenter and made his picks for the top five teams in the country.
His top four teams shouldn’t surprise anyone, but he made a controversial pick for No. 5. He took the Houston Cougars, who were at No. 15, and bumped them up to the top five after their huge upset win over the Oklahoma Sooners.

Alabama are deserving of their No. 1 ranking after their 52-6 drubbing of USC on Saturday. The Seminoles scored 36 straight points to pull off a huge comeback win over the Rebels Monday night, so they should be near the top as well.
People are certainly going to talking about Herbstreit’s decision to put the Cougars in the top five, however. It will be interesting to see if this team can finish the season undefeated and possibly get into the College Football Playoff at the end of the year.
