In Sunday’s loss to the Texas Longhorns, Notre Dame quarterback DeShone Kizer had a huge game as he threw for 215 yards and five touchdowns while rushing for 77 yards and another score. After that performance, the redshirt sophomore quarterback has drawn comparison to one former dual-threat guy.
NFL.com analyst Lance Zierlein talked about how Kizer compares to late Tennessee Titans quarterback Steve McNair. He reminded fans of how McNair was a gunslinger during his time at Alcorn State and later became a game manager in the NFL.
“My comparison for Kizer, a redshirt sophomore, is still a work in progress, but from a size and diversity of talent standpoint, he reminds me of the late Steve McNair. While McNair was more of a game manager in the pros, he was a gunslinger at Alcorn State. McNair had a very pedestrian yards-per-attempt average (6.9) in the pros, but “Air McNair” had the ability to push the ball down the field, especially coming out of college. Kizer has that same arm strength to attack down the field and can make winning throws on the move.”
During his career in the NFL, McNair went 91-62 as a starter and helped the Titans to four playoff appearances, including an appearance in Super Bowl XXXIV. He threw for over 31,000 yards and 119 touchdowns while rushing for over 3,500 yards and 36 touchdowns during his career.
It will be interesting to see if Kizer is able to live up to this hype for the rest of the 2016 college football season.
