Rocky Long: Aztecs must be ‘on edge’ against Cal

The San Diego State Aztecs have a tough task this week as they host the PAC-12’s Cal Golden Bears. The Aztecs will have be on their A game if they are going to pull off the upset and head coach Rocky Long knows that very well.

The Aztecs opened the season last week with a 31-0 win over FCS opponent New Hampshire. Long spoke with The San Diego Union-Tribune about how he wants his team to be more “on edge” for this huge match-up on Saturday.

“I thought we went about it last week businesslike,” Long said.

“That’s OK if you’re the better football team. It’s not OK if the other team has more talent than you. If the other team has more talent, you have to be more than businesslike. You’ve got to be on edge. you’ve got to be riled up. You’ve got to play with a sense of urgency and excitement about you and I didn’t get that from them last week.”

The Golden Bears will have had more than two weeks to prepare for the Aztecs after they had last week off following their season-opening win against Hawaii in Australia on Aug. 26.

In that game, graduate transfer Davis Webb threw for 441 yards and four touchdowns.

It is set to be a great match-up between a battle between a high-powered offense and a stout defense this weekend. The game takes place on Saturday at 10:30 p.m. EST on CBS Sports Network.
