T.J. Perkins wins Cruiserweight Classic, becomes first Cruiserweight Champion

Earlier this year, the WWE announced the Cruiserweight Classic, which would feature 32 of the best wrestlers from around the world coming in for a big tournament. Wednesday night, the final four squared off in the semifinals of the tournament to determine Monday Night Raw’s first Cruiserweight Champion.

Japanese sensation Kota Ibushi, who signed a contract with WWE back in July and has started making appearances at NXT, faced off against T.J. Perkins, who at one point wrestled for TNA as the masked character Manik/Suicide, in the first semifinal with Perkins pulling out the big win.

Tournament favorite Zack Sabre Jr.faced off against Mexican up-and-comer Gran Metalik, who pulled off the upset over the British superstar. Perkins and Metalik faced off in the finals with the former getting the win to become the first Cruiserweight Champion since it was deactivated in September 2007.

Perkins is set to make his Raw debut along with a handful of other Cruiserweight superstars on Monday, Sept. 19. It should be fun to see the high flyers take to the ring on the main roster once again.
