South Florida, Central Florida establish new rivalry trophy

Since 2005, the South Florida Bulls and Central Florida Knights football teams have played every season aside from a four-year stretch from 2009-2012. Now that they are in the same conference division, it is hard to see them not having each other on the schedule every year from here on out.

Because of this, they have created a new moniker for their fairly new rivalry. The schools announced in a press release on Wednesday that their annual game will now be called “The War on I-4.”

But this doesn’t count for just football as all sporting events between the two schools will be given that nickname from here on out. The first meeting in this new campaign is later this week between the volleyball and men’s soccer teams.

Which ever school has the most points after all 14 sports in which the two teams plays will take home a trophy shaped like the Interstate 4 road sign. The two football teams will also battle over a similar separate trophy in their Thanksgiving week meeting.

In the football rivalry, the Bulls are 5-2 over the Knights and most recently won last year with a 44-3 beatdown of the hapless 0-12 Central Florida team. This year is expected to go in favor of the Bulls again, but now that there is a trophy involved, I would expect the Knights to come out inspired and ready to play.
