Navy LB Josiah Powell named defensive player of the week

Navy linebacker Josiah Powell had a strong showing last weekend. Now, he is being honored for his standout performance.

On Wednesday, the Football Writers Association of America announced Powell has been named the FWAA/Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week for his Week 6 performance during the Midshipmen’s 46-40 upset win over the No. 13 Houston Cougars.

During the game, Powell recorded two interceptions and three tackles; they were the first interceptions of the senior’s career.

Powell’s first interception led to a field goal to tie the game late in the first half, while he returned his second pick 36-yards to the endzone to give Navy a second-half lead.

As a result of his Week 6 honor, Powell will be added to the Bronko Nagurski Watch List for the remainder of the season. The National Defensive Player of the Year award finalists will be announced on Thursday, Nov. 17.

Powell and the Midshipmen have the weekend off before returning to action next weekend against Memphis.
