FIU’s Jonnu Smith out for year after girlfriend pours boiling water on his head

FIU senior tight end Jonnu Smith watched his collegiate career come to an end on Halloween when his five-month pregnant girlfriend poured boiling water over his head.

Smith suffered severe burns on his head, neck, back, a shoulder and an arm and his girlfriend, Mary Gaspar, was charged with aggravated battery.

From the report:

The two argued through the day over the attention Smith was paying her and their relationship. While in Smith’s dorm room and “feeling extremely emotional and stressed,” she told police, she boiled a pot of water. Then, she walked over to Smith and poured it on him.

When Smith didn’t react strongly enough for her, she started hitting him with her open hands, she told police.

It is a traumatic end to Smith’s collegiate career, but when he is able to make a full recovery he will be able to look towards a potential career at the next level.

Smith ended his time at FIU with 175 receptions, 1,936 receiving yards and 17 touchdown catches.

Currently projected as a late-round pick to undrafted free agent, it will be interesting to see how teams look into it. You know they will be doing their due diligence.
